So, you’ve decided it’s finally time to make that hair dream a reality with hair extensions – we couldn’t be more excited for you! But whether you’re ready to rock hair extensions on short hair or long hair, the first step in is to figure out which application method and hair extension lengths will work best for you.
Without choosing the correct length or a high-quality application method from a professional stylist, your extensions may not blend seamlessly with your existing locks, making them appear fake or noticeable.
We want you to love your look, so read on to get all the details you need to make the best decision on the hair extensions method and hair extensions lengths that’ll give you the most natural, comfortable, and long-lasting new look.
How to Choose the Type of Hair Extensions
Before you can even begin to think about the different hair extension lengths, you’re probably wondering, “what’s the best hair extensions?”
For us, the answer is simple! We only offer Natural Beaded Row and Invisible Bead Extensions application methods using hand-tied hair because they give our clients:
The most natural look
The longest hold-time
The most comfortability
The most customizability in terms of custom-color and hair extension lengths
Other methods can cause damage to natural hair or require frequent reapplication and maintenance trips to the salon.
How to Choose Your Hair Extensions Length
So, once you’ve decided on the best application method for your lifestyle, it’s time to choose the optimal hair extension length to achieve those long-awaited hair goals!
Whether your stylist is applying hair extensions for curly hair or straight hair, they’ll likely estimate or actually measure the length of your natural hair from right above your ear, down to your ends. (Especially with hair extensions for curly hair, you’ll want to make sure to pull your hair as straight as possible to get a true picture of the entire length.)
As a general rule, your hair extension length should typically not exceed more than 4 inches past your natural hair length for the most seamless, natural-looking blend. The longer you want to go with your hair extensions (on short hair especially), the more volume you’ll have to add to ensure the transition from where your natural hair ends to where your extensions fill in the gap isn’t an abrupt and noticeable one.
Keep in mind that your height can also affect how different hair extension lengths will look on you. If you’re petite, you may want to opt for short hair extensions (between 12 to 18 inches in length). If you’re taller, longer sets (such as 20 to 24 inches) should work nicely.
A certified hair extensions stylist is the most qualified to recommend an ideal hair extension length. They’ll consider your hair type, face, frame, and lifestyle before making the best (and most beautiful!) recommendation. Your stylist should also share tips and the tools you’ll need to extend the life of your extensions in between appointments.
Can You Apply Hair Extensions on Short Hair?
If you’ve always been lacking in length, you’ve probably thought about getting extensions at some point in your life. Short hair extensions are certainly possible, however, it’s important to note that typically your natural hair will need to be at least 4 to 6 inches long to be a good fit for extensions.
If you want to know how to hide extensions in very short hair, it’s all about choosing the right length and styling it properly. Your stylist has to be able to conceal the extension application rows under your natural hair, and it would be very difficult to blend the extensions without that minimum length. The ideal candidates for hair extensions on short hair are those with at least shoulder-length hair. (If your hair isn’t quite there yet, you may have to let your hair grow out a bit – it will be worth the wait!).
