It’s summer, and just like everyone wants to feel the waves on the beaches of Malibu or Santa Monica, clients everywhere are looking to level up their go-to style with beach waves. Follow my step-by-step guide below to achieve my signature beachy waves at home.

Beach Wave Hair Extensions Tutorial

Ready to get started? The first thing you’ll need to do is gather your supplies. Get comfortable in front of a mirror so you can check your reflection while you style. Grab a curling iron, heat protectant spray, brush, comb, and hairspray.

Here’s how to achieve my signature wave look:

Step 1

Spray your hair with a heat protectant and let it dry. Most people use a 1-inch or 1.25-inch for loose waves, but I like bumping up the size for an ultra-natural look. Use a 1.5-inch curling iron for the ultimate wave style.

Now that you’ve mastered my signature wave (I know you nailed it!) let’s review some other essential tips for maintenance at home.

Key Tips for Hair Extensions Care at Home

After getting your hair extensions applied and styled, the next step is ensuring you follow ALL of your at-home care instructions. This will make your life easier (and mine!) if you properly care for your extensions between follow-up appointments.

Here are a few essential at-home care tips to keep in mind:

How to Wash Hair Extensions

  • Choose hair products free from harsh chemicals. These will dry out your delicate strands.

  • Only wash your hair 2-3 times a week and use a dry shampoo in between washes to keep your hair extensions strong and healthy.

  • After washing your hair, check your wefts for any disruption or tangles.

How To Dry Extensions

  • You’ll want to ensure you know how to dry extensions without damaging them. Always use a heat protectant spray and low heat settings (never exceed 350 degrees). Focus on your roots first and work your way around your hair extensions. If you like to section your hair when blow drying, you can, but just be careful of the wefts when doing so.

  • Use one of my favorite hair extension brushes (both wet and dry options), or gently run your fingers through your strands while blow drying.

  • Since the hair is hand-tied, you’ll want to take the time to dry the top of your wefts completely anytime they get wet. Using direct heat like a curling iron or straightener on damp hair can cause excessive damage to the hair’s structure. You can also skip the blow dryer and heat tools entirely and try some alternative ways to style your hair heat-free.

How to Brush Hair Extensions

  • Use a hair brush that is gentle enough for your hair extensions, like a soft boar bristle brush or the two-tiered Tangle Teezer. A regular hairbrush can pull at your attachment points and loosen the application's security.

  • Always place your fingers at the top of your wefts when brushing your hair. This will prevent the brush from potentially snagging the seam of the hand-tied hair. If you snag the seam with your brush, it can cause the hair to go upside down and shorten the longevity of your hair extension wefts.

  • Brush in a downward motion starting at your ends and working your way up to the top of your extensions. This way, you brush through knots in sections as you go along.

Keep up with your scheduled follow-up appointments. I recommend returning to the salon every 4-8 weeks (depending on how fast your hair grows) after application to move up, tighten, and secure your hair extensions. If you follow these steps along with your at-home care instructions, you’ll have beautiful locks that will last.
